Education

Parivartan e-Classrooms, in partnership with eVidyaloka

What if sitting wherever you are right now, you could teach a child in rural India? This is what one of our most exciting and innovative projects, e-Classroom has made possible. It is being run in two schools in Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand in partnership with eVidyaloka.org.

What is it?

The biggest challenge facing rural education today is the quality of education and teacher absenteeism. Though under various schemes, the Government has ensured that there is a school in every village, the quality of education still remains a concern. We aim to tackle this problem through interested teaching volunteers in cities who through Internet video-conferencing teach the children in these rural schools, Maths, Science, English and General Awareness. Through effective audio visual aids, interactive teaching and school-specific course contentment development, the learning is enriched and increased.

How is it run?

These e-Classrooms which have been set up in 2 schools in 2 states consist of a LCD, a computer and a broadband connection. A local volunteer from the school coordinates classes with eVidyaloka teaching volunteers to set up classes. The lessons being taught through these classes are kept in tune with what they are being taught in actual classrooms ensuring better learning and understanding. The idea of learning from "a person in the TV" and seeing effective visuals of what they are being taught has caught the kids' interest and a visible difference in their attitude towards learning and the capacity to understand has been seen. The enrolment in the school in Juvvalapalem, where we run these classes has gone up significantly!

Direct Support to Education

What is it?

This program aims to overcome the financial challenges faced by deserving students from rural schools who strive to pursue higher studies beyond 10th class.

How is it run?

To start with, deserving students in the village school are either identified by our volunteers and surveyors or brought to our attention by the community members themselves. The Foundation members then interact with these selected students to understand their career goals and aspirations as well as their financial circumstances. If the Foundation members are convinced by the student's case, financial help is offered by channelizing the funds of interested donors to them. It should be noted that this is a merit cum need program. Continued financial assistance may also require the student to keep his academic performance above a certain level. All else being equal, this project gives emphasis to girl child education.

A few well deserving cases have been identified, selected and provided with financial assistance to pursue higher education, beyond 10th grade, funds for which have been donated by individual donors. An annual scholarship for girl child higher education called the Sanjana Chowdary Yalamanchali Scholarship (named after the daughter of the donor) for girl child education has also been launched.

Library

What is it?

The aim of this project is to encourage reading, both in English and Telugu, by providing access to newspapers, magazines and books. This library has been set up in the Government School in Juvvalapalem, next to the Computer Centre. It has also been equipped with a DVD player and TV to provide facilities for Audio-visual Aids. Children in rural areas, have little or very limited scope for constructive recreational activities. So, through library they can use their free time usefully and develop reading as a hobby. Apart from school children, this library will also serve housewives who can use it during their free time as well as school teachers.

How is it run?

Currently, we have collected over 400 books (for all age groups) and subscriptions for 8 magazines, both in English and Telugu as donations. The genres to be covered by the books in our library range from comics to story books to religious books and even Telugu to English dictionaries. The magazines subscribed range from Chandamama to Telugu Vidyarthi, a magazine having information about educational and career opportunities for youth. We also have a collection of educational CDs for all age groups. Presently, the books are not lent out, all the villagers can come to the library and use it free of cost.
