Informaton and Communication Technology

Computer and Internet Centre

What is it?

One of the core aims of Parivartan Foundation is to empower people by providing them better information and communication facilities, e-commerce facilities. They can broaden people's perspectives and open new opportunities for the youth. The digital gap between rural and urban India is appalling. IT-enabled services sector in urban India employs world-class technologies, but the rural areas are still largely bereft of access to such technology. The Parivartan Computer and Internet Centre in Juvvalapalem , located in the upper primary school is an attempt to bridge the gap and bring the rewards of IT and communication to the villages. It is open to all members of the community. Having 7 computers with multimedia and DVD drives, printer, scanner, web camera and broadband internet connection, it has all the facilities needed for bringing the information revolution to the villages. Training programs are carried out in this centre free of cost.

How is it run?

There is a full time instructor appointed by the Foundation to provide training, information and communication facilities to the villagers. He has also been given a debit card to book train and bus tickets for the local population. Some of the ways in which the facilities provided at the centre are being used:

  • Access to broadband internet and e-mail: This has been especially useful for the teachers of the local government schools as they are using it to gather resources to improve their teaching

  • Dissipating information to farmers - particularly with regard to government schemes and agricultural inputs.

  • Training in various levels of courses basic internet usage, word processing, photoshop as well as languages like C: The training classes have been a huge success with few of the village youth even getting employment in Computer related jobs. Students, school teachers, farmers, village elders and even housewives have enrolled for training classes.

  • Railway ticket booking (at no extra charges): Earlier villagers had to travel for almost an hour, just to check the availability of tickets. So now this service is very popular and convenient for the villagers

  • Various bill payments: DTH services, mobile recharges, etc.

  • Students are viewing counseling and seat allotment results as well as exam results, saving their time and money.

  • Reading e-papers of newspapers.

  • The ICT infrastructure is also used by the Parivartan e-Classrooms project.
